The lavenders Sue grew from cuttings are starting to flower and look pretty amongst the bird-attracting native shrubs and creepers in the main garden bed. The kikuyu lawn, planted as runners about a year ago, is establishing very nicely this winter. A new 10kV garden fence is keeping animals securely away from the developing garden. Near the fence, two-year-old bottlebrushes are ready to come out of their protector sleeves and receive mulch. The sandy area that denotes a recently completed tile drain for any unused grey water is about to be planted out in ground covers and mulched. |

This part of the garden has only recently been planted out and still holds leftover roofing iron destined for the donkey shelter. |

The privations of owner building: First, there were 4 months spent in a caravan before the building site had a room reasonable enough to put a bed in. It was 4 months before we had running water or electricity. Overall, there were 10 months without a proper toilet, and a further 10 months where we had to climb up onto the toilet platform with the aid of a paint bucket while we waited for the steps to be made. This knee-wearing time of our lives was thankfully brought to a close by the partner of a work colleague, who actually had the time and expertise to make these steps. Now the timber will need to be stained and sealed to match the rest of the bathroom, before small finishing touches will complete the ensuite. |

It is so reassuring to have a 10kV fence around the house and all its carefully planted, establishing gardens. Before this new wire fence, we had turbo-braid running off the main unit, and it only ran at around 3kV, so once or twice there was the heart-stopping experience of cows in the garden after a game of bovine limbo! |
